  • It’s the Friday-est of Fridays! I’m headed to Portland OR and in a few short hours—Lord willing—will get to squeeze the neck of one of my dearest friends. It’s been more than 3yrs and while I love that technology lets us text and talk it’s just not the same. As today is all about travel that means I have time to actually do social media. How about a spin on #fridayintroductions? I considered myself mostly low maintenance—although who actually admits to being high maintenance—but recently I have noticed a couple ways I’m actually kind of extra: My looong posts. I’m all about words. Reading and (attempting to) say the good, meaningful ones. I have had a midrange model home espresso maker for the last 5+ years. I’m a little addicted to my honey latte; made from fair trade small batch beans. And, I love that it’s an easy way to spoil my guests. In fact I’m all about quality for those things that have the most daily impact. Sometimes that means buying less and intentionally like with my @rothys (after years of my husband encouraging me to invest in good shoes) and my @betterlifebags (quality, durable enough for all my work stuff plus amazing social mission). Sometimes it means thrifting loved but timeless, well designed furniture. When it comes to the big pieces in our home more are imperfect antiques or vintage than are new. I’m rather fumbling when it comes to fashion but in my home beauty matters. And, I’ll do with incomplete and in process until I get that just right piece or solution. I’m all about depth over fluff. So with friends I want to work/serve together, talk about the deeper things rather than banter small talk and spend nights on the town. With clients it means a consultation so that I can create a wedding that is meaningful to you. Rather than a transactional logistics call or questionnaire. How are you a little extra?   • I just spent a good 20mins writing an introductions turned confession post before moving it onto my computer and spending another 2hrs turning it into a blog post. The confession? I have been hiding. But the thing is 800 words later I’m not sure what I said is useful to anyone else. It might have just been a really long throat clearing for what does need to be shared (soon). At risk of prolonging the hiding I have saved the draft and will revisit it after this weekend. In the meantime I’m going to feed my soul (yay #ifgathering2019), soak up some wisdom, and get a little perspective. So instead of a picture me and as many self focused words here are some pretties for your Friday. Hopefully they give you a reason to exhale for a moment. And, tell me, how do you reset?
  • Your wedding should be as meaningful as it is beautiful. Whatever adjective you use in place of beautiful—funky, intimate, warm, elegant, simple, fun—you want your marriage celebration to capture the profound aspects of your relationship and commitment, your anticipation and hopes for the future. All the decisions and details aren’t simply cultural expectations. Now archaic or still significant these traditions exist because choosing marriage is a big deal. While the wedding elements—traditions or design—you select aren’t near as important as your actual vows; they matter because your marriage matters. So here the secret: the more meaningful and intentional your choices the more beautiful-funky-intimate-warm-elegant-simple-fun your wedding will be. For example: This table is for a venue open house. When I first started planning I went through the usual check lists of what is: trending, new, and on brand. All while eliminating ideas that might not resonate with couples or would be too similar to what my colleagues have recently designed. (For couples this stage is often the Pinterest rabbit hole.) Blame it on my current season but it was exhausting. Joyless. So, I chose to forgot about the “smart business” checklist. My designs are always as different as my clients are diverse anyways. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone I decided to pretend I was the client. Keeping some loose variables in mind I went antiquing/junking (a personal hobby) to find inspiration. Some less-than-perfect sliver candlesticks and (reproduction) ticking napkins gave me the vision of a belyingly simple and spontaneous party—maybe a fresco—of garden flowers, gathered family treasures, and everyday tableware. To those elements I added my blue Japanese plates to tie in the stripes on the napkins and left the linen tablecloth a little rumbled. Now I have a design that invites you into a story, reflects my taste, was a joy to curate, and is beautiful without being overly concerned with trends.   • Who is going to the #lubbockbridalshowcase Sunday? Wait, it is Sunday already ... so make that who is going this afternoon?! This year I had the privilege of assisting a couple colleagues with flowers for their booths. You’ll be able to spot Bouquet 1 in @thewillowseventcenter booth and Bouquet 2 with @greenhouse_creative. While you’re checking out all the great wedding professionals make sure to stop by these two booths and say “hi”, learn about their services, and see these pretties in person. Happy planning! P.S. And, if you’re worried about overwhelm; go in with a plan. Know which categories of pros you need to research and give yourself permission to ignore the rest. And, make yourself little notes like “friendly photographer” or “artful images” so that when you are processing after the event you remember who you liked and why and can follow up with them.

  • Samantha and Tyler wanted their #decemberwedding to be seasonal but not Christmasy. For their guests to feel like they had been invited into a cozy home, an intimate celebration. So @samanthaw76 and I paired rich colors, vintage rugs, and warm candlelight to convey just the welcoming environment they had dreamed of; a near perfect #christmaswedding.
